Out of the 96 concrete group houses sanctioned in the first phase for the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee families living in the Refugees Rehabilitation Camp — functioning since 1990 — in Melmonavoor here, 44 have been completed and occupied by the families, while 42 are nearing completion.
The remaining 10 are in the foundation stage.
More than 300 families are living in the camp.
A visit to the camp on Friday revealed that 44 completed houses have been occupied while 42 houses, work on which was started more than six months ago are nearing completion.
These houses would be completed within two months, said an official of the Block Development Office.
Each house being built at a cost of Rs. 1.25 lakh has just a single multipurpose room measuring 10 feet x 12 feet. The camp has common bathroom and toilet facilities.
On completion of these houses, the Department of Refugees Rehabilitation would be sending proposals to the government for construction of houses in the second phase for the remaining families.
