Thirty-five cadre belonging to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) have filed a petition seeking bail in the High Court Bench here in a case registered by the Kenikkarai police in Ramnathapuram district.
K. Mohamed Yasin and 34 others, were booked under Sections 147 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Public Properties Damages (TNPPDL) and Section 152 of the Indian Railway Act.
According to the prosecution, on November 15, the case was registered against them on charges of pelting stones at the Rameswaram-Tiruchi passenger train, damaging the windscreen of the locomotive and injuring the loco pilot, during their protest against the demolition of a portion of the compound wall of the Mullivaikal Martyrs Memorial in Thanjavur.
In their petition, the cadre claimed that the case against them was ‘false and registered with a political motive.’ The cadre denied the charges of damaging public property and undertook to cooperate with the investigation. The petitioners were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on November 15. Justice C.T. Selvam has posted the case to Wednesday.
