Thirty more marine police stations are to be established as part of the State government’s plan to strengthen coastal security.
The facilities and infrastructure to help in better monitoring of the 1,076-km long coastline, account for a chunk of the nearly Rs.30 crore sanctioned by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the State police force.
An official release on Monday said Rs. 21.36 crore had been sanctioned for procuring 30 four-wheelers, 60 two-wheelers and equipment for the proposed stations. At present, there were only 12 marine police stations in the State.
Ms. Jayalalithaa also sanctioned Rs.1.68 crore for setting up repeater stations at Tiruvadanai and Kamudhi in Ramanathapuram to improve police communication facilities in the sensitive district.
The release said the Chief Minister also accorded financial sanction of Rs.1.34 crore for construction of a building, with an area of 6,662 sq ft, for the police hospital in Vellore. The hospital is at present functioning on land belonging to the Archaeological Survey of India.
