Three persons were killed and six others sustained injuries in an accident on Chennai-Bangalore National Highway on Saturday.
According to the police, the accident took place around 1 a.m. when the front right tyre of a car, proceeding towards Chennai, burst. The driver, Bharath (38) of Rajaji Nagar, Bangalore, lost control of the vehicle which then jumped over the median near the road overbridge at Vellaigate and hit a goods carrier moving in the opposite direction. Bharath and his wife Deepa (32) died on the spot, and the goods carrier caught fire.
On receiving an alert, fire service and police personnel rushed to the spot and rescued seven other occupants of the car — Meena (56), Rajendraprasad (61), Abhilesh (36), Indhu (30), Nisha (8) daughter of Bharath, Abhish (3) and Babloo (8 months old), sons of Bharath, and sent them to Government District Headquarters Hospital, Kancheepuram, where Meena later succumbed to her injuries.
Later, the injured were referred to various hospitals in Chennai, the police said.
