December 11, 2013 02:50 pm | Updated 02:50 pm IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

Three persons from Odisha were rescued from an agency supplying manpower to industrial units functioning on the outskirts of Chennai.

Enquiries reveal that the rescue operation was jointly organised by the District Revenue Department and International Justice Mission (IJM), based on a communication received by the IJM from National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Referring to a complaint from an NGO, Odisha Goti Mukti Andolan, in which it was stated that the father of one of the victims from Puri District in Odisha had alleged that the victims were denied freedom of movement and forced to work under threats from the contractor at Chennai. The NHRC directed the IJM to pursue the case.

As the field investigation revealed that the complaint was true, a team of officials from Revenue Department and police landed at the dwelling unit in Thirumudivakkam in Kundrathur police station limit on Sunday, where the manpower agency had provided accommodation to those brought from northern States for employment in industrial units functioning around Chennai.

Three persons, — Basanth Malik, Naba Malik and Amiranjan Dass, son of the complainant, Anirudha Dass — were rescued, IJM sources said.
