November 15, 2014 01:04 pm | Updated 01:04 pm IST - NAMAKKAL:

In a joint operation carried out by officials from Chhattisgarh and Namakkal district, 21 women and seven men, who were allegedly employed as bonded labour in a poultry unit on Tiruchi Road were rescued here on Friday night.

The families of workers from Chhattisgarh had recently visited them at the unit.

No salary

Workers had told their family members that they were not given salary and were not allowed to move out of the premises.

Family members after returning to their native place lodged a complaint with officials in Chhattisgarh who in turn informed officials in Namakkal.

On Friday, a team led by Namakkal Revenue Divisional Officer K. Kalimuthu and officials from Chhattisgarh along with police personnel inspected the poultry unit and rescued the workers.

Enquiry

The officials told The Hindu that an enquiry would be conducted with all the workers.

Only after that it could be ascertained how they were treated by the poultry owner.
