Rose-ringed parakeets seized from captivity in Kaliyakkavilai.

Representatives of People for Animals, a NGO headed by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi, in association with the Forest Department officials rescued eight rose-ringed parakeets and 16 black-headed munias at Kaliyakkavilai recently.

Based on a tip-off, a team led by S.S. Davidson, executive committee member of People for Animals, and forest officials S. Durai Raj and J. Ramesh went to Kaliyakkavilai and rescued the birds from captivity.

The birds were rescued on the direction of District Forest Officer Vismiji Viswanathan and Assistant Conservator of Forests Gopaladoss, Mr. Davidson said. The poachers had clipped the wings of the parakeets. The birds had no other physical injuries.

The birds were released in the biodiversity park at Udayagiri Fort in Thuckalay.
