238 policemen given cash reward

Two hundred and thirty eight police personnel, who were responsible for the arrest of ‘Police’ Fakruddin, Bilal Malik and Panna Ismail, suspects in the murder cases of S. Vellaiyappan, State Secretary of the Hindu Munnani and ‘Auditor’ V. Ramesh, State secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, were given monetary reward by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister appreciated their work and presented cheques totalling Rs. 2.53 crore.

Last month, Ms Jayalalithaa handed over cheques to 22 members of the special team which had contributed to the arrest of the suspects. In a swift and dramatic operation, the police had carried out a raid and arrested Bilal Malik and Panna Ismail in Puttur of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 km from Chennai, on October 5. The previous day, ‘Police’ Fakruddin was arrested. Twenty police personnel attached to the special team were given one-step promotion.

The Chief Minister also declared open, through video conferencing at the Secretariat, a building to house the office of Tirupur city police commissioner.

Seven police stations, three traffic police stations, two all-women police stations and a city central crime branch would function under the control of the Commissioner’s office. Creation of 538 posts, entailing an expenditure of Rs. 17.29 crore, and the provision of equipment, costing Rs.19.18 lakh, had been sanctioned by Ms Jayalalithaa.

Chairman and Managing Director of the Police Housing Corporation Anoop Jaiswal presented to the Chief Minister cheques for Rs. 1.5 crore towards the Corporation’s dividend to the government for the years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

Among those present were Sheela Balakrishnan, Chief Secretary; Niranjan Mardi, Principal Secretary (Home); K. Ramanujan, Director General of Police and Narendra Pal Singh, DGP (Crime).

Earlier, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday administered a pledge on national integration on the occasion of 96 birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Among those present were Ministers and officials.

Ms Jayalalithaa also paid floral homage to the former Prime Minister.
