The District Rural Development Agency has planned to construct 2.25 lakh individual toilets in the district this year, and around 58,000 individual toilets have so far been constructed, according to Collector T.N. Hariharan.

Inspecting various development works being executed in villages in Dindigul union on Tuesday, he said the DRDA had identified 74,311 beneficiaries under the Nirmal Bharat Abhyan Scheme. Each beneficiary would get Rs 12,000 for construction of toilets.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) workers could be utilised for construction of toilets, he said.

Under Green House Scheme, 635 green houses with solar facility had been constructed and 115 houses were under construction against a target of 2,172 houses.

The MGNREGS workers would also be utilised to plant saplings on roadsides. The DRDA had decided to plant two lakh saplings to make the district green.

Special attention was given to rural areas to grow plants near waterbodies and on field bunds. Community participation was necessary to achieve the goal, he said.

Administrative sanction had been given for execution of 89,493 works at an estimated cost of Rs 265.96 crore, of which 14,671 works had been completed and the rest were under execution, he noted.

DRDA Project Director M.S. Pandiarajan and Dindigul BDO Sekar accompanied him.
