With two days to go for submission of applications for revision in electoral roll, over 22 lakh applications have been received by the poll authorities across the State.
On Sunday alone when State-wide special camps were held, about 9.2 lakh applications were submitted by prospective new voters and those who wanted to have corrections or changes or deletions of names carried out in the rolls.
A senior official in the Public (Elections) Department says that throughout the previous week, about one lakh applications were received.
Till about a week ago, around 1.3 online applications were submitted. During the revision exercise in 2012, as much as 23.6 lakh applications were received.
This time, the authorities have taken several initiatives to ensure greater enrolment of people. For example, in Chennai, the District Election Officer-cum-Corporation Commissioner saw to it that mobile phone users were informed of the dates of special camps through short messaging system (SMS). In Tiruvarur town, innovatively-designed hoardings were put up to draw the attention of people. In some other districts, intimation slips regarding the revision exercise were sent through school children so that they were passed on to parents of the children.
