As many as 2,195 students from the IIT Madras Zone have found their name in the common merit list in IIT-JEE 2011.
“This year, 62,884 students appeared for the JEE for admission to IITs throughout the country from the zone, comprising five southern States, out of whom 2,195 are in the common merit list,” says Professor Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Chairman - JEE, IIT Madras Zone.
“The performance this year has been brilliant. And this has increased the overall cut-off in general category to 229 from 190 last year,” he says. “It is heartening to see students from the Scheduled Castes, and even Scheduled Tribes score high marks. In fact, many SC students find a place in the common merit list (CML).” From Tamil Nadu, 8,583 students appeared and 227 are in the CML. Andhra Pradesh, as before, has more number of students cracking the exams to join the prestigious IITs as students from the State are passionate about joining IITs and take the exams very seriously.
Nearly 37,740 students appeared from Andhra Pradesh of whom 1,614 are in the CML.
Vipul Venkataraman with All India Rank of 63 is the State's topper in JEE. Studying matric in The Ashram till Class X, he switched over to CBSE for higher secondary. “Follow what your teachers tell you at the coaching class. There is no need to deviate,” he says. N. Vaishnavh is attending an orientation camp in Mumbai to participate in the international Chemistry Olympiad. A student of Sir Sivasamy Kalalaya, he is ranked 16 at the national level in the ISAT exam conducted by the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. In IIT-JEE, he is ranked 70 in the country. “I will study computer science at IIT – Madras,” he says. He was coached at Science and Mathematics Academy for Real Talents (SMART) run by K.K. Anand. Ranked 96, E. Dhivya started early in Class XI for JEE beginning with a foundation course in SMART. When she started her preparations, there were a few discouraging signs as she was a girl and as she was studying in the matric stream. “I used to follow everything in the class and take down notes. We are trained to participate in Olympiad in the coaching class in conceptual understanding of subjects,” says Dhivya who plans to pursue B.Tech in Computer Science at IIT-Madras.
Online Counselling
The online counselling started on Wednesday for all students, Mr. Kamakoti says. This year, counselling will be online for students in the physically disabled (PD) category but these candidates will have to report to a medical board at IIT-Madras on June 8, 9 and 10, he emphasises.
