As many as 200 villages in Tamil Nadu will get the digital network service of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as a part of the Prime Minister’s vision to bring 2.5-lakh panchayats under the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), said Minister for Communication and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad here on Monday.
The NOFN was part of a programme to empower people to connect through Digital India Programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he told reporters after garlanding the statue of Swami Vivekananda at the Vivekananda Mandapam here on the occasion of his 152nd birth anniversary.
The pace of digitisation would give a boost to the IT industry. With a view to establishing Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) units in smaller towns, a policy initiative to provide incentives for the promoters was on the anvil. A policy in this regard would soon be out, he said. The government had initiated a plan to strengthen the Postal Department in a big way, he added.
Later, Mr. Prasad inaugurated a “Walk of Hope” by Sri M, director, Satsangh Foundation at Manav Ektha Maidan (0 point of NH 47 at Kanyakumari) from Kanyakumari to Kashmir for religious harmony and peace. Minister of State for Shipping and Highways Pon. Radhakrishnan and Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju were present.
