20 college students injured in accident

As many as 20 students of a private engineering college suffered injuries after the bus in which they were travelling hit a coconut-laden lorry in A.K. Samudram, near Puduchatram, on the Bengaluru – Madurai National Highway here on Monday.

The incident took place at 8.30 a.m. when the college bus with over 45 students was on its way from Salem to the college in Rasipuram.

While bus driver Keethi Prathaban (70) attempted to overtake the lorry, the bus hit the rear side of the lorry and later hit the median. The driver and a student Gomathi suffered serious injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Rasipuram. Both were out of danger. Other students were admitted to a private hospital in Namakkal and also at Government Headquarters Hospital in Namakkal. The Rasipuram police are investigating. Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy visited the injured at the hospitals.
