2 tonnes of mangoes destroyed

Officials of the Public Health Department of the Vellore Corporation raided 17 mango shops at the Nethaji Market and the Old Bus Stand here on Saturday and seized two tonnes of mangoes ripened using calcium carbide in seven shops.

V. Govindan, Corporation Health Officer, Vellore, said that the seized mangoes were later taken to the Corporation's compost yard in Sadupperi, where they were buried in deep pits after applying bleaching powder.

The Corporation health authorities seized several bottles of fake branded beverages and destroyed them. This was following raids conducted at shops in Sitting Bazaar, New Sitting Bazaar and Old Bus Stand.
