Two incidents of gang-rape were reported in the State on Tuesday.
Two men posing as policemen allegedly abducted and raped a 25-year-old woman near Karaikudi early on Monday night.
The woman was with her male friend in a cashew grove forest when the suspects forced her to go with them and raped her at knife-point. After keeping her in captivity for ten hours, they let her go early on Tuesday.
Police said the woman, working in a mobile shop in Karaikudi, had gone with her friend to the isolated place near the grove late on Monday evening when two middle aged men, clad in khaki trousers, came to the spot on motorcycless and abducted her. Before leaving the spot, they grabbed the mobile phone of her friend and his vehicle key.
The man lodged a complaint with the Chettinad police. The police went in search of the woman but could not trace her. Sensing trouble, the suspects kept the woman in the forest all through the night and dropped her at the new bus stand around 4.30 a.m., police said. The police admitted her to the Government Hospital, Karaikudi.
Based on the complaint by the woman, a divorcee, the Karaikudi all women police registered a case under Section 376 (rape), 363 (abduction) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Special teams have been formed to nab the accused, he told The Hindu. The Chettinad police have secured some suspects and are interrogating them.
Another case
In Rasipuram, four persons, involved in the gang-rape of a 27-year-old woman, were arrested. A search is on for one more accused.
The arrested were identified as Jayasuriya (21), Ganesh Kumar (23), Birla (25) and Rajesh (21), all working in sago units in Namagiripettai, near Rasipuram. The woman had got separated from her husband two years ago and her two daughters were with her parents in Karur. She worked at a sago unit in Namagiripettai and was living with a 27-year-old man who worked in the same unit. On Sunday night, while the two were returning home, a five-member gang intercepted them and assaulted the man. They took her to a secluded place and allegedly raped her. Based on a complaint, a Sub-Inspector visited her house, but failed to initiate action. It is said that the local area councillor pacified the woman and the man and asked them not to reveal the incident. Fearing for their safety, the two decided to leave the village. But, the Superintendent of Police, S. R. Senthil Kumar, on receiving a tip-off rushed to the village and held inquiries.
