Ministers distribute road safety awareness pamphlets at bus stands

A total of 186 persons lost their lives in road accidents in Tiruvarur district in 2013, said S.Kaliraj Maheshkumar, Superintendent of Police, while flagging off a marathon organised as part of the road safety week celebrations here on Saturday.

Police personnel, students, and general public participated in the marathon. While 5,700 cases were registered for road safety violations during 2013 in the district, at least 186 persons were killed in road accidents, the SP said.

Mr.Maheshkumar said that drunken driving was the reason behind most of the accidents and advised people to avoid drunken driving. Later, he distributed prizes to school and college students who won the marathon.

At Mannargudi, Food Minister R.Kamaraj distributed road safety awareness pamphlets at the bus stand in which Sudha Anbuselvam, chairperson, Mannargudi municipality, K.Vilvamani, Regional Transport Officer, and R.J.Uthaman, Revenue Divisional Officer (in-charge), were present.

THANJAVUR: Housing and Urban Development Minister R.Vaithilingam distributed pamphlets on road safety at the new bus stand as part of a road safety awareness campaign here on Saturday.

The pamphlet contained 34 slogans such as ‘helmets save lives’, ‘wear helmet, save life’, ‘avoid drunken driving’, ‘avoid over speeding’, and ‘avoid footboard travel’ among others. Speed breakers, road dividers, caution boards, and signals have been erected. N.Subbaiyan, Collector, Savithiri Gopal, chairperson, Thanjavur municipality, and transport officials participated.
