‘1633 household toilets to be built under MGNREGS’

In the 2015-16 budget, the Chief Minister had announced that 15 lakh household toilets would be constructed to make Tamil Nadu, an open defecation-free State.

As part of this scheme, 1,633 toilets will be constructed during the current financial year under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Kanyakumari district, a release from the Collector, Sajjansingh R. Chavan said.

The selected beneficiaries would be given Rs. 12,000 as subsidy for constructing toilets in their residences.

It was also decided to establish village-level poverty eradiation societies/ panchayat-level SHGs federation to ensure total sanitation in all villages.

The Poverty Eradication Societies and the Panchayat-level SHGs Federation would be given Rs. 300 as incentive for every toilet built in their panchayat.

Applications for constructing toilets can be obtained from the panchayat offices concerned, BDO office, DRDA Office at the Collectorate free of cost.

The scheme will be implemented through panchayat presidents.

After obtaining permission from the panchayat presidents, toilets should be constructed within a period of three months.

The subsidy would be released in two instalments. The first instalment will be released after the basement was completed and the rest of the amount after the construction was over. Those who did not have toilet facility in their homes are asked to utilise the scheme.

The social organisations encouraging construction of household toilets and field workers will be given awards, the release also added.
