14 students hospitalised

As many as 14 students, including five girls of Panchayat Union Elementary School in Vedukathampatti, were admitted to hospital after they consumed noon meal with eggs and fell ill here on Friday.

Around 300 students are pursuing elementary education on the school premises, except Class IV which was being conducted at a nearby building.

On Friday, food was served to students of Class IV around noon. A girl student first complained of giddiness and nausea. Soon, 13 other students developed similar symptoms and were taken to Primary Health Centre in Kollapatti for treatment.

Later they were shifted to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. Doctors attending them said their condition was stable.

Parents and relatives of the students thronged the hospital. District Revenue Officer S. Selvaraj visited the children at the hospital.

Deputy Director of Health Services K. Jegadeesh Kumar said that samples of rice and eggs were taken and sent to laboratory. The report is expected on Saturday, he said.
