Under the Digital India Mission, high-speed broadband would be extended to the entire 12,524 village panchayats in Tamil Nadu, Aruna Soundararajan, Secretary, Department of Telecommunication and Chairperson of Telecom Commission, said recently.

At a review meeting in Coimbatore, Ms. Soundararajan said that high-speed broadband service would be provided to every village panchayat in Tamil Nadu under the 2nd phase of the Union Government's Bharat Net project.

The scheme will be implemented through the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited(TACTV) in the State with the assistance of 26,700 local cable TV operators. Since the cable TV operators would maintain Optical Fibre Cables from their control room , it is possible to extend internet facility at a speed of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, she said. At present almost all district headquarters have broadband connection with 1 gbps and it would be expanded to 2 gbps. BSNL is providing the link through the Fibre-to-Home (FTTH) technology at a low price.

Officials from TACTV, BSNL and the departments related to communication attended the meet.
