12,500 water samples to be tested

As part of the National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness Week observance from June 27 to July 3, the district administration has planned to test 12,500 water samples across the district.

The nation-wide campaign is observed to stress the importance of safe drinking water, proper hygiene and sanitation facilities in rural habitations.

A meeting to chart out plans for the celebration was held at the Collectorate here on Friday. Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy said that the week is observed every year by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) during which awareness programmes, rallies and testing of drinking water will be carried out.

He said that TWAD will be testing 12,500 water samples drawn from places in 322 panchayats, 19 Town panchayats and five municipalities in the district. Testing will be done between July 1 and 3 and drinking water testing kit were already provided to the field workers. He said that training for the workers would be held in Namakkal on June 28, Namagiripettai on June 29 and Tiruchengode on June 30.

“School teachers will be trained to conduct 14 different tests,” he added.

The Collector asked the people to utilise the water bodies properly and also test the quality of water in their area. TWAD Engineer (Administration) P. Rajendran, executive engineers and officials from local bodies participated.
