Values of assets of some candidates run to the tune of crores

Some more crorepathis were among 120 persons who filed nominations on Wednesday for the Lok Sabha polls.

R. Prabhu, former Union Minister and Congress candidate for the Coimbatore constituency, and C. Devadasa Sundaram, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam nominee for Tirunelveli, were some of the contestants whose moveable and immoveable assets ran to the tune of several crores of rupees.

In the case of Mr Prabhu, the individual moveable assets included a BMW car, purchased in 2008, whose value was put at about Rs. 15 lakh and 25 kg silver, valued at about Rs. 10.65 lakh. The gross total value of the moveable assets was estimated around Rs. 7.58 crore. In the case of his wife [Anita Prabhu], the former Minister declared that his wife had gold ornaments weighing 1,740 grams with precious stones whose value was about Rs. 49.48 lakh. Her moveable assets’ total value was put at Rs.11.29 crore.

The value of immoveable assets held by Mr Prabhu and his wife was put at about Rs. 33 crore and Rs. 9.1 crore respectively. An important component of Mr Prabhu’s immoveable assets was a residential property, measuring built up area of 13,900 sq. ft. in Sathya Naraya Avenue in Chennai, whose current market value was Rs. 22.46 crore, apart from a house on Race Course Road, Coimbatore, and a flat in Dwaraka, New Delhi. In the case of DMK's Tirunelveli candidate, the movable assets of Mr Sundaram included two LIC policies for the value of Rs. 1 crore each and a commercial property, measuring 46,000 sq. ft., in Nellikuppam village of Thiruporur taluk in Kancheepuram district, formed part of his immoveable assets. As on date, 318 persons have filed nominations. Of them, 289 were men; 28 women and one – transgender. For Alandur by-election, one more person has filed the paper.
