11 held for cheating businessmen

The gang claimed that it could convert copper into iridium

Eleven persons were arrested on the charges of cheating businessmen in Varushanadu on Friday.

The gang tried to lure businessmen with the promise that they could covert copper into iridium, the sale which could fetch them crores of rupees. A copper plate and a battery were seized from them.

The arrested were R. Kannan (31), V. Thangapandi (43), P. Kannan (35), K. Karuthapandi (42), all from Varushanadu, M. Kumaresan (44) of Annanji, his wife K. Santhi (40), K. Jeganathan (69) of Theni, R. Azhagesan (52) and S. Srinivasan (40), both from Madurai, Isaq Ravindra Paul of Aruppukottai and his wife I. Suseela (55). Cases were registered against them under Section 420, read with Section 511, of the Indian Penal Code.

The police are in search of two more accused – Shanmuga Sundaram and Selvam, both from Chennai.

The police said the gang had kept a copper plate and a battery in a box and claimed that they could convert the metal into iridium.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team of police arrested them.
