10,000 to participate in phase II cleaning of Tamirabharani

Exercise to be taken up at 60 spots between Papanasam and Seevalaperi

More than 10,000 students, government officials and volunteers are expected to participate in the second phase of cleaning of the Tamirabharani to be organised on Saturday (September 23).

After Anna University’s regional office here prepared a comprehensive project report on cleaning the river, the district administration launched the first phase of the exercise on July 16, and has planned to continue the cleaning operation on September 23 with the support of students and volunteers to be drawn from 30 colleges, non-governmental organisations and business establishments.

Chairing a meeting held here on Tuesday evening to fine-tune the second phase of the cleaning exercise, Collector Sandeep Nanduri said more than 10,000 students would take part in the exercise at 60 spots between Papanasam and Seevalaperi from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. on September 23.

“The laudable services of the best students/ volunteers’ groups involved in cleaning the perennial river will be rewarded. On behalf of the district administration, I appeal to colleges, NGO volunteers, government employees, teachers and public to participate in the exercise to be organised for cleaning the drinking water source of several million people living in the southern districts,” Mr. Sandeep said.

Cheranmahadevi Sub-Collector Akash, District Revenue Officer P. Muthuramalingam, Dean (In-Charge), Anna University – Tirunelveli Regional Office, Sakthinathan, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency A. Palani, Revenue Divisional Officer Maithili, City Health Officer Porchelvan and representatives of the NGOs participated in the meeting.
