100 sovereigns stolen

April 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - NAGERCOIL:

Burglars decamped with 100 sovereigns of gold ornaments from the house of a tour operator.

Police said burglars who entered the house of Nelson Sundar (41), a tour operator from Jacob Street near Derik Junction, on Monday night after breaking the rear door, took 100 sovereigns of gold ornaments from the chest in one of the rooms where his children were sleeping.

Since Mr. Nelson was sleeping in an air-conditioned bedroom, neither Mr. Nelson nor his wife could hear the noise.

When he woke up around 3 a.m., he realised on seeing the broken rear door that burglars had broken in and stolen the valuables.

For a wedding

Since Mr. Nelson, who had to attend a wedding along with his family, had taken the valuables from the bank locker only a couple of days ago, police suspect that those who closely followed him might have orchestrated the burglary.

Confusion

Though the police came to the spot in the small hours itself, confusion prevailed for several hours over arriving at the exact amount of stolen valuables.'Superintendent of Police Dharmarajan visited the spot. Vadaserry police have registered a case.
