Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will be sporting 100 different expressions in sand sculptures at his burial site at Pei Karumbu near here when the Ministry of Defence (MoD) lays the foundation stone for his memorial on Wednesday.

Puducherry-based sand sculptor K. Gubendhiran, who has created a record of sorts by sand sculpting the 30 faculty members of Bengaluru-based Chitrakala Parishad in 12 hours, has accomplished the task of making Kalam with 100 different expressions in sand sculpture.

Supported by the Puducherry-based Assist World Records and Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Foundation, the artist, a native of Veerampattinam in the Union Territory, began the feat at 12 noon on Monday and finished it on Tuesday. He could use the feat to get into the Guinness Book of World Records but that was not his ambition.

“I am doing this to pay homage to the former President and inspire the youth to his ideals and vision,” he told The Hindu .

He used the sand available at the site.

The art of sand sculpting came naturally to Mr Gubendhiran, who hails from the fishing community.

He, however, honed his skills by doing under graduation in visual art in Puducherry and post graduation from Chitrakala Parishad.

By Monday evening, he had come up with more than dozen sculptures of Kalam, some in smiles and some in pensive mood.
