Three traders from Rajasthan found two of their suitcases containing 10 kg gold jewellery missing from under their seat in a Chennai-bound train early on Sunday.

Railway police said Varadharam, Madhan Singh and Jitendra Singh, came to Coimbatore two days ago to buy and sell gold jewels. After completing their business, they boarded the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

It was said that the traders kept the jewellery in two suitcases and secured these to the seats using a chain and a lock before going to sleep.

When the train arrived at Jolarpet station they noticed their suitcases were missing and they immediately reported this to the railway police.

After a preliminary investigation, police on Monday took the traders to the railway stations at Salem, Erode and Coimbatore for further inquiry. Superintendent of Police, Railways, Chennai, A. Kayalvizhi carried out an inquiry at the Erode junction. She said four special squads have been formed to nab the thieves.
