Noted music director, lyricist, director and film producer Gangai Amaran, is likely to join the BJP at a public meeting in Chennai on Saturday to be addressed by national party president Amit Shah.
Mr. Amaran, brother of music maestro Illayaraja, met national general secretary Muralidhar Rao and Tamil Nadu BJP leaders at Kamalalayam on Friday morning, adding credence to the speculation.
“I am not joining BJP against some existing political parties. I hope that BJP can give shape to the cultural dreams cherished by me and my family,” said Mr Gangai Amaran.
Politics is nothing new to Mr Gangai Amaran and Ilayaraja, who along with their elder brother Pavalar Varadharajan toured across Tamil Nadu in the 1960 and acted as cultural ambassadors of the Communist movement.
“After that we never associated ourselves with politics and totally involved in our profession. Now we hope the BJP government can certainly provide a shape to thought of people like me in the area of art and culture,” Mr Gangai Amaran said.
“We certainly see there is a deterioration of art and culture and preservation of art and culture is the need of the hour,” he said.
BJP sources said he is one among a number of popular figures the party is trying to induct in Tamil Nadu.
