Educational activities at the premier Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, were going on normally and there was no swine flu scare among the students, an official spokesman of the IIM-A said.
The need for the premier institution to issue the clarification arose following the sudden “disappearance” of a girl student suspected to be suffering from swine flu. Her test report proved positive, but even before it was received, she left the IIM-A hostel on Saturday.
She later informed the institution that she had arrived at her home in Delhi where she would undergo treatment.
As soon as her report was received confirming swine flu, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation authorities contacted the IIM, but by then she had already left. As news spread, many of the catering and other staff members, and several students in the hostels, started wearing protective masks.
However, the spokesman said the institution was in touch with the AMC Health Department and was taking preventive steps and there was no panic on the campus.
Meanwhile, the death of a 37-year old woman in a private hospital in Ahmedabad raised doubts about the death toll due to swine flu in the State. The woman had symptoms of swine flu but the test reports were still to be received. If confirmed, the swine flu death toll in the State would go up to three.
Two persons, one each in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, died due to swine flu last week.
According to a spokesman of the State Health Department, seven new cases of swine flu were reported in different hospital in the State on Monday.
The total suspected cases of swine flu stood at 293 while the total positive cases went up to 46. So far, reports were negative in 187 cases.
