Suu Kyi a symbol of resistance and freedom: Congress

November 15, 2010 12:51 am | Updated December 04, 2021 11:44 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Congress has welcomed the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar after a long house arrest.

In a statement here on Sunday, party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said the Congress recognised her fight for democratic rights and acknowledged her as a symbol of resistance, freedom and human rights.

The party fondly remembers her stay in India along with her mother in her formative years, and also her father General Aung San's immense contribution to building the new Myanmar, the statement said.

Ms. Suu Kyi walked free from her house arrest on Saturday evening for the first time since 2003.
