Suspected GNLA militant killed in Meghalaya encounter

A suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant was killed in an encounter with a joint team of Army and police in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on Monday, police said.

Acting on a tip off about presence of militants in the area, the Army and Meghalaya police commandos conducted patrol in Kodomsali area along Assam-Meghalaya border at around 2 a.m. where there was a brief exchange of fire between the militants and the security forces, police said.

In the encounter one militant was killed while another escaped, West Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh said.

The body of the slain militant has been taken to the Lakhipur police station for identification and conduction of post mortem, police said.

Two pistols — one 7.65mm (USA made) and one 9mm pistol (China Made) — along with fired cases and live rounds, two magazines, two hand grenades and a rucksack bag were recovered from the slain ultra, the Defence ministry PRO at Guwahati said.
