Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Sunday accused Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj of playing to the gallery over the rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi.
Speaking to journalists at the State headquarters of the Congress here, he said, “Some parties are politicising this dastardly act.”
“Unfortunately, I saw Sushma Swaraj again playing to the gallery,” Mr. Singh said. There had been a 300 per cent increase in child abuse incidents over the last couple of years, an issue of major concern.
He said the police-population ratio in India was one of the lowest in the world.
“Parties should see this [child rape] issue in totality rather than do politics on it.”
Mr. Singh said the Congress-led UPA government had responded quickly to the recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee, set up in the aftermath of protests against the gang rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi.
