External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj landed in Dhaka on Wednesday for her first solo overseas visit since being sworn in.
During the “goodwill visit”, Ms. Swaraj is expected to press the reset button on ties between the new government and the Sheikh Hasina government, over the many irritants in ties, including the Teesta water settlement and the pending land border agreement. A controversy is brewing over reports that India has shelved a policy on visa-on-arrival. However, sources said there was “no change in policy on visas.”
On Wednesday, she spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had opposed the UPA government’s initiatives with the Hasina government.
In the past few days, there’s been a wider diplomatic and political outreach: Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Tariq Karim met Home Minister Rajnath Singh, while India’s High Commissioner to Dhaka Pankaj Saran has been in Delhi for the Heads of Mission conclave.
