Four relatives of Ashok Chavan were allegedly allotted flats in the scam-ridden Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society in Mumbai and he had processed the files on the project, first as Maharashtra Revenue Minister and then as Chief Minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party said on Saturday.
BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman, while demanding Mr. Chavan's resignation, said nothing should be done to dishonour members of the armed forces or de-motivate their rank and file. Several top retired officers have also been reportedly given flats in the society at one-tenth the market price.
Security risk
After “paid news,” this was the second big scandal involving the Chief Minister, the BJP pointed out. The matter must be probed by a sitting Supreme Court judge and the Centre should invoke Defence of India rules to cancel the society's occupation certificate as a Vice-Admiral had reportedly written three months ago to the Chief Secretary and the Municipal Commissioner about the security risk posed by the residential towers. This was a “copybook case of corruption and nepotism” going hand in hand with a nexus among politicians, high-ranking bureaucrats and officers of the armed services, the BJP said.
