The Supreme Court on Friday expressed its displeasure at and disapproval of statements made by Union Ministers criticising its judgment refusing to decriminalise homosexuality.
A Bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi, however, declined to entertain a public interest litigation petition by Purushotham Mulloli, who drew the court’s attention to the statements made by Union Ministers Milind Deora, Kapil Sibal and P. Chidambaram, and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abudllah, attacking the verdict. The petitioner said their criticism was not fair and they thus violated the oath of office.
“We agree that political leaders should be careful while making statements. These are all unwanted comments,” the Chief Justice told counsel Harshvir Pratap Sharma.
“We agree with the sentiments expressed by you. Persons occupying high positions must realise their responsibility while making statements. We have conveyed all feelings and displeasure. Beyond this, we can’t do anything.”
