Curfew was relaxed for two hours this morning in Anantnag town of south Kashmir but had to be reimposed after groups of youths took to streets and clashed with police.

The situation was, however, peaceful in most other parts of the valley with curfew being completely lifted from Baramulla, Sopore, Kulgam, Koimoh and old city area of Srinagar, police said.

As authorities announced relaxation in curfew at 8 am for two hours in Anantnag, 55 kms from here, groups of youths came out on the roads at Lal Chowk and staged a march.

Police and paramilitary forces deployed in the town tried to disperse them, police said adding, the protestors threw stones, prompting re-imposition of curfew in the town.

Curfew was imposed in Anantnag town on June 29 following death of three persons in clashes between protestors and security forces.

Police said curfew was relaxed in Pulwama and Rajpora towns of Pulwama district from 8 am. There was no report of any untoward incident during the relaxation period.

As the situation remained by and large peaceful in the valley yesterday, curfew was lifted completely in Baramulla, Sopore, Kulgam and Koimoh, police said.

Curfew which was lifted from Civil Lines areas of Srinagar Saturday morning, was today withdrawn from the old city areas, police said.

People thronged marketplaces to buy essentials as they were short in supply due the week-long curfew.

Government-run ration depots opened this morning and long queues were seen outside them. Shops and business establishments in uptown Srinagar also opened and traffic plied on all routes.
