Amnesty International on Friday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking an independent investigation into the allegations of crimes under the international law committed by the Sri Lankan security forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the civil war in the country.
The organisation claimed the memorandum had the support of 14 lakh people.
It was submitted to Minister of State in the PMO V. Narayanaswamy by Amnesty International India’s Chief Executive G. Ananthapadmanabhan here.
The human rights organisation sought a United Nations-led mechanism for monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka. It urged Colombo to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act and “stop attacking and intimidating its critics.”
The petition urged Dr. Singh to “stand up for justice” in the island nation and act to end the climate of impunity perpetuated by Colombo.
The “campaign for justice in Sri Lanka” has received support over the last eight months through the IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) and SMS modes of communication.
