The 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was thrown open for vehicular traffic on Tuesday, after remaining closed for the past three days.

“The highway was opened today for one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar,” a Traffic Department spokesperson said, adding that only light vehicles were allowed to ply on the arterial highway in the morning.

The only all weather road, which connects Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, was shut on Friday evening for conducting necessary repairs on the road which had got damaged due to rains and landslides.

However, it could not be thrown open for traffic earlier due to incessant rains which led to more landslides at many places along the route.

The trucks carrying essential supplies to the Valley were also allowed to move from Udhampur later in the day, the spokesman said.
