The condition of the 23-year-old gang-rape victim, undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital here, has not showed any improvement since Sunday, according to doctors attending on her.
Releasing a health bulletin on Monday, Medical Superintendent B.D. Athani said: “The patient is conscious, critical and is still not out of danger. She continues to be on ventilator and has high grade fever. There has been no improvement in her condition though she was conscious on Sunday night.’’
“Her vital parameters are stable and there is normal urine output. The spread of infection is our prime concern and all other medical complications are secondary,’’ said Dr. Athani.
‘Drop in the platelet count’
According to the doctor, the patient developed a tendency for internal bleeding and now she had reduced capacity for coagulation. “Her liver function has been compromised and there is drop in the platelet count. Her fever could be because of the sepsis which is a matter of serious concern.’’ The hospital is also offering psychiatric counselling to the victim and her family members. “There is, however, no indication of anxiety or depression in the patient,’’ Dr. Athani said.
Family’s appeal
Meanwhile, thanking the nation for its support and urging people to be calm, the girl’s father speaking to a TV channel said: “The incident has broken me, but my daughter’s courage is binding the family together. She is a fighter and her resilience has amazed us. I appeal to everyone to pray for the well being of my daughter. We need your support now.”
“My daughter has fought against all odds since her childhood be it poverty or getting quality education. She has always come out a winner and she will beat this one too.’’
Speaking over the phone to The Hindu , the victim’s brother said his sister’s condition had shown no signs of improvement on Monday. “Doctors told us that my sister’s condition is stable but she is still not out of danger.”
“We are sure our sister will survive this and go on to lead a full life. No human being can do this to another. We as a family want the guilty to be given the death penalty, nothing less in this case would do,’’ he said.
