The north-east on Saturday joined the nation in mourning the Delhi gang-rape victim, and demanded immediate, exemplary and deterrent punishment to the culprits.
Spontaneous protest rallies were taken out by student and women’s bodies, and political parties. Some people raised the demand for capital punishment to the culprits. Silent and candlelight processions were taken out across the region.
Gogoi’s assurance
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, while condoling the death of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student, said the State government had initiated measures, in consultation with all concerned, to prevent such incidents.
The Assam State Commission for Women demanded immediate and exemplary punishment to the “rapist-murderers.”
“Wake-up moment”
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said the death of the girl had come as a shock when the entire country was praying for her recovery. “My heart goes out to the brave girl and her family, more particularly for her parents, who had pinned high hopes on her like every family in the country. Let this be a wake-up moment for all of us. Let us resolve to make a better society where women will share equal rights and respect,” he said.
