Samajwadi Party on Saturday pledged its support for UPA nominee Hamid Ansari for the post of Vice President poll.

“Our party believes that the Rajya Sabha Chairperson is a person who is not associated with any political party. Hamid Ansari’s image as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha has been non-partisan. So, SP supports him for the post of Vice President,” Party General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav told reporters.

Mr. Ansari was on Saturday declared as the UPA candidate for the Vice President poll scheduled on August 7.

Asked about his party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statement that only a political person should be considered for the President’s post, Ram Gopal Yadav said “he had stated that only a political person should be appointed as the President.

“Hamid Ansari’s name was never discussed for President’s post. This thing does not apply to the person who has already been Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

“This would have been applicable if there was any new entrant. Hamid Ansari is already the Chairman of Rajya Sabha. So, there is no point in discussing whether he is political or non-political,” he added.
