Sonia discusses Telangana with Manmohan

Congress president Sonia Gandhi held discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other core committee members of the party on the Telangana issue here on Tuesday.

The meeting assumes significance, as the Telangana Joint Action Committee has called a bandh in Andhra Pradesh for Wednesday to urge the Centre to clear the doubts in the people about its commitment to a separate State.

The meeting decided to work out a mechanism for setting in motion the process of formation of Telangana, as MPs, MLAs and Ministers from the region, cutting across party lines, have been pressing for a time frame. They made it clear that they would not withdraw their resignation unless the Centre made the announcement.

Central committee

One of the suggestions made at the meeting was setting up a Central government committee, comprising representatives of various parties, to go into the nitty-gritty of the formation of a Telangana State.

Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, A.K. Antony and P. Chidambaram, and the Congress president’s political secretary, Ahmed Patel, attended the meeting.
