Congress President Sonia Gandhi has congratulated AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on her spectacular victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Ms. Gandhi spoke to Ms. Jayalalithaa over phone on Saturday.

“Gandhi called up all leaders from all the election going states who have emerged victorious. Phone calls were made to leaders across political lines,” a senior Congress leader said.

There was speculation that Ms. Gandhi also invited Ms. Jayalalithaa for tea in New Delhi, but there was no confirmation.

The AIADMK combine led by Ms. Jayalalithaa defeated the DMK-led coalition of which Congress is a partner.

Few months before the Assembly elections, Ms. Jayalalithaa had expressed readiness to join hands with Congress if it dumped the DMK, which has 18 Lok Sabha MPs.

DMK is the third largest constituent of the UPA after the Congress and Trinamool Congress and is part of the ruling alliance at the Centre.
