Solicitor-General of India Rohinton Nariman on Monday resigned from his post. His resignation, said highly placed sources, came after difference of opinion between him and Union Law Minister Ashawani Kumar on certain issues.

Mr. Nariman was appointed as the second most senior law official of the country on July 23, 2011 following the resignation of Gopal Subramanium on July 14, 2011.

Mr. Nariman was designated as a senior advocate at the age of 37 in 1993 when the then Chief Justice of India M.N. Venkatachaliah amended the rules for designating a lawyer as a senior advocate by reducing the minimum age limit of 45.

Additional Solicitor-General Mohan Parasaran is one of the contenders for the SG post, the sources said.

I agree with Mr.Partha. Nation certainly owes an explanation from the
government. Perhaps time and age has come that government must realize
it is not always and all the time the lullaby of "Yes Minister" works

This is the classical problem of any specialist working with a generalist. Specialists analyze things at micro level whereas the generalists only pretend and they may know things at macro level. It is better for the specialists to quit and keep quite.

Yes,this goes to show that the government does not want eminent and
competent jurist/ solicitor/advocates to defend its policies or cases
before the Supreme Court and High Courts. Now government can appoint a
spineless and mediocre advocates to defend its cases especially in the
taxation and other high stake case.

He is aware of the Treatment , meted out to Mr Gopal Subramanyam. Having known that he must be prepared to receive back. By the way, highly educated and elite senior advocate does not mean that they are always right. A Minster or the Government Ministry per se is not an ordinary person or Body . He/ Ministry is working for Government and people unlike these high profile advocates who work for money.R Nariman was appointed only as a measure to stop SC strictures . R nariman was famous as he was appointed at an age which was lowered by 7 years for him. Suddenly all are writing as if R Nariman is a mahathma. he represented Companies who waged legal wars against India and Public- RIL Gas - Novaratis etc to name a few.

The nation owes an explanation from the government for the reasons behind SG resignation. Otherwise, why someone who was the blue-eyed boy of the government just 18 months back have to resign without assigning any reason. It appears that the Ministry interference is beyond the tolerable limit, which could not be acceptable for anyone with high professional standards. It is high time that the political and bureaucratic egotism is put to an end in this country.

I am a layman in matters of law, but is it not possible for the Solicitor-General of the country to come out in public and speak up if not all details but something which gives us, the common man, a hint about, developments taking place behind the curtains. Yes, I agree that there is something fishy about two Solicitor-Generals resigning back-to-back. Such matters should be given due diligence before they later create such problem which may create much bigger political issue which is very common in our country.

I think the point to ponder over is why these guys are resigning...2 people from the same position have resigned back to back....there is some issue.

Everyone, including those in the Government, must learn to treat others
with respect and dignity. The key in avoiding these situations is being
an inspiring team leader and taking everyone along; the life is all
about creating win win situations.
