Six dead, 29 injured in Bhilai plant gas leak

At least six persons were killed and 28 injured in a gas leakage in the Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh on Thursday. The deceased include two deputy general managers, one fireman, two Bhilai Steel Plant workers and one contract worker.

“Following a breakdown in the pump house, there was a gas leakage from the glass furnace of the steel plant. It affected 34 people out of which six died,” said Vijay Mairal, PRO of the Deputy General Manager of the plant.

The injured have been shifted to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Research Centre out of which five are in a critical condition, he said.

“The nature of the gas will be confirmed as soon as information is clear,” said a senior official of the plant.

Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed grief over the incident, and said every possible effort would be made to save the injured.
