Shumsher Sheriff front-runner for post of Election Commissioner

Secretary to the Vice-President and 1977 batch IAS officer Shumsher K Sheriff is the front-runner for the post of Election Commissioner.

As there will be a vacancy for EC following the demitting of office by Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and the likely appointment of EC V.S. Sampath in his place, the name of Mr. Sheriff is being considered at the top level, official sources said.

H.S. Brahma is the other EC in the three-member Commission.

Mr. Quraishi is demitting office on June 10.

Mr. Sheriff had earlier worked in the Rashtrapati Bhavan and as Chief Secretary to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

He belongs to the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory Cadre (AGMU) of IAS. If selected, he will have term in Nirvachan Sadan till August 17, 2018.

He belongs to a family hailing from Vaniyambadi town in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
