Secretary to the Vice-President and 1977 batch IAS officer Shumsher K Sheriff is the front-runner for the post of Election Commissioner.

As there will be a vacancy for EC following the demitting of office by Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and the likely appointment of EC V.S. Sampath in his place, the name of Mr. Sheriff is being considered at the top level, official sources said.

H.S. Brahma is the other EC in the three-member Commission.

Mr. Quraishi is demitting office on June 10.

Mr. Sheriff had earlier worked in the Rashtrapati Bhavan and as Chief Secretary to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
