Amid political slugfest between the Congress and the BJP over visits of VIPs to disaster-hit Uttarakhand, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has said VIPs can now visit the hill State as the situation there is under control.

“I had advised VIPs not to travel to Uttarakhand as rescue and relief operations were in full swing. The advice was only for three-four days. Now the situation has changed. Anyone can go there. Even [Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra] Modi can go,” Mr. Shinde told journalists here on Wednesday when asked about Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s visit on Monday despite Mr. Shinde’s advice.

Mr. Gandhi’s visit had led to a war of words between the Congress and the BJP, with the latter accusing the Centre of being selective in its approach.
