West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Monday that it was a “shame” that the last word on the death of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was yet to come out.
“This is sad but true. We know the birthday of Netaji but not the date of his death. This is such a pain we cannot explain it in words. It is a shame and it will remain so till the date of his death is actually known,” Ms. Banerjee said at an event to mark the 115th birth anniversary of Netaji at his ancestral Netaji Bhavan.
Referring to Netaji's escape from this house in 1941, Ms. Banerjee said that no one knows since then whether he was alive or dead.
Although she ended her speech by saying “Netaji Amar Rahein,” the Chief Minister later corrected herself saying she was not aware whether Netaji was alive or dead. “I do not know whether he is alive or dead. So I wish him a long life and say long live,” she said.
There have been differences of opinion about Netaji's death by different commissions appointed by the Centre.
Ms. Banerjee said she had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare Netaji's birthday as a national holiday.
