April 05, 2014 01:12 am | Updated November 16, 2021 09:25 pm IST - New Delhi:

Senior lawyers have welcomed the Mumbai court judgment awarding the death sentence to the three accused who raped a photojournalist, saying it would act as a deterrent.

Senior advocate P.P. Rao said the case tried under the new Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, would act as a deterrent at a time when such crimes are increasing.

Senior counsel K.T.S. Tulsi said: “There is no other way that such heinous crimes can be brought down unless the punishment is proportionate to the crime.” Additional Solicitor General K.V. Viswanathan, said the verdict should reinforce the people’s faith in administration of criminal justice.
