With the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government having given its nod for Telangana, seven Congress MPS — six from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha — resigned from Parliament membership in protest against the division of Andhra Pradesh.
While the Lok Sabha members handed over their papers to the Secretary-General of the House, T.K. Viswanathan, Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao submitted his resignation letter to RS Secretary-General Shamsher K. Sheriff.
Mr. Viswanathan told The Hindu that the Secretariat was examining the resignation letters. The Lower House members who resigned are: the former Union Minister, A. Sai Prathap, Anantha Venkatarami Reddy, C.V. Harsha Kumar, V. Arun Kumar, L. Rajagopal and S.P.Y. Reddy.
Informed sources said four Union Ministers from Seemandhra region too gave their resignation letters to the party’s Andhra Pradesh in-charge, Digvijay Singh, on Friday.
They were asked not to take any hasty step as the party was in the process of constituting a high-power committee headed by Defence Minister A.K. Antony, which will consider their grievances on the Telangana issue.
